P.J. Utility Trailers

A PJ Utility Trailer is one of the most customizable open utility trailers on the market. In this post you will learn what a utility trailer is used for, about options on these trailers, and some things that make a PJ Utility Trailers a great buy.

Why Utility?

Open Utility Trailers are a smaller trailer model that come with either one or two axles.  They are lightweight and come with rails.  Utility trailers are great for transporting ATV's, furniture, building supplies, lawn care equipment, appliances, tools, and even debris.

When shopping for a new trailer, make sure you know what you are going to use it for.  When transporting vehicles, heavier equipment, or any larger loads, an other trailer is probably better for you.  Look at our blog posts on other models for information on larger trailers.

Gate and Rail Options

A standard feature on our P.J. Trailers Utilities is the Ready Rail sides.  Ready Rail is a patent pending rail system that allows the user to customize their trailer to their specific needs through bolt-on accessories.  Some of the bolt-on accessories include d-rings, landscape toolboxes, spare tire mounts, bed dividers, and many more!  With Ready Rail your trailer can transform over its life to match your ever changing needs. Ready Rail is available exclusively on PJ Trailers.

When you buy a utility with our Ready Rail option we recommend adding the ATV ramps shown above, the trailer above features Side Mount ATV Ramps.  The side mount ATV ramp option gives you the ability to load an ATV/UTV in the front and one from the rear between the fenders.  Also providing your with a 57" opening great for loading and unloading pallets.

One important decision we help you make, when you pick a utility trailer, is what gate option you need.  Example: if you have a low slung unit you need to load, a great option would be our four foot, spring assisted, fold up gate with a two foot dovetail and a transition lip.  Where as if you need your utility trailer to transport a stationary item such as a generator or pressure washer we would recommend the straight deck with a bi-fold gate in order to have a full deck to place it on and less wind drag when your pulling it down the road.

Features

P.J. Utility Trailers are built strong and come with a one year limited warranty.  Unlike most small utility trailers, P.J. Utilities come with a four inch c-channel frame and four inch c-channel wrap tongue standard.  This standard frame comes with a three year warranty!  We are confident in the reliability of this trailer!

Every P.J. Utility Trailer comes standard with Dexter EZ-Lube Axles.  These 3,500 pound spring axles come with a 5 year warranty.   Dexter Axles are known for cutting edge innovation, consistent, reliable quality and safe, smooth performance.

Each PJ utility trailer receives 2" or 2 5/16" BULLDOG™ coupler depending on the axle rating. The Bulldog™ coupler has a well-earned reputation for being the toughest, most durable coupler in the trailer industry.  Every PJ utility is equipped with a swivel-mount BULLDOG™ jack. These zinc coated jacks are set back in the tongue so they do not interfere with your truck tail gate. They can also be quickly flipped up and down, saving you time and energy when compared to a traditional a-frame jack.

These utilities aren't just built strong, they are powder coated, instead of painted, to last as well.  Powder coat is regarded as far superior to conventional liquid paint. Powder coat is more durable and lasts longer that liquid paint while still providing a high gloss finish. It is also much more environmentally friendly than traditional paint since it emits virtually no VOCs and "overspray" can be recycled.

What Makes a Gooseneck Great

When buying a trailer one has a seemingly endless amount of add on options.  In this post we will share with you the gooseneck features and options we have, the common uses of our goosenecks, and some reasons why a gooseneck is right for your transporting needs.

Trailer Solutions is a PJ Trailers Certified Dealer but we also carry Delco Stock Trailers, with more products coming soon.

Important Features

The most substantial price difference between trailers typically comes from what axle option you choose.  After choosing the axles that will be capable to carry your loads, (2x 7k, 8k, 10k, 12k, 15k, or 16k) you'll have the choice between spring, torsion, and air ride axles.  Spring axles cost less, and still provide the strength you need to load heavy equipment.  PJ's unique independent torsion axle suspension means a smoother ride for your trailer and greater peace of mind for you, and does not add much to the cost of your trailer.  The air ride suspension option is the smoothest riding gooseneck air suspension on the market and is exclusive to PJ Trailers. Expect greatly improved driver comfort and excellent cargo protection.

When you buy a PJ Gooseneck Trailer with torsion axles you get a 10 year axle warranty, the spring and air ride come with a 5 year axle warranty.  Axles aren't the only thing that come with a great warranty.  PJ Trailers provide you with a 3 year frame warranty and a 1 year limited warranty on the whole trailer.

If you have ever shopped for a used PJ gooseneck you might be surprised how close the price can be to a new trailer. The premium components and overall build quality makes for a trailer that ages well and will retain much of its original value.  Which is great for when you need to update your trailer.

Use of Our Trailers

For Hot Shot Trucking we have access to up to forty four foot Gooseneck or Pintle Hitch trailers.  Monster Ramps make loading your equipment with a narrow wheel base simple and safe onto your Hot Shot Trailer.  These giant ramps are spring loaded to assist in lifting them from the deck and from the ground.  Show off your new trailer with up to 42 bullet lights per side!

For Farmers who need to haul hay bales, our standard gooseneck comes standard with 2" x 3/8" rub rail that includes both stake pockets and pipe spools on 12" centers.  These give you almost unlimited tie down points, while also strengthening the rub rail.

For Livestock industry trailer needs, we carry Delco Stock and Horse trailers.  Delco Trailers offers a full line of steel livestock trailers such as Bar Tops, Metal Tops, Premiums, Groundloads, and Bumper Pulls in addition to Horse trailers.  Delco utilizes sound design, premium components, and excellent workmanship to create top-quality products.

For Everyone hauling heavy equipment, our 30 foot and longer goosenecks receive standard under frame bridging.  This feature minimizes frame sag under heavy loads.  Our gooseneck frames include beefy 10" x 12 lb I-beam cross-beams every five feet for maximum frame strength.  These huge cross-beams significantly reduce trailer torque and frame twist.  Lastly, when you order a PJ Gooseneck it comes with an 12" I-beam neck and riser.  I-beam necks are simply stronger and last longer than the commonly used c-channel necks.  At Trailer Solutions, we feel that an I-beam gooseneck should be standard, not an "upgrade."

Gooseneck Over Bumper Pull

A perk of pulling a gooseneck trailer (instead of bumper pull) is that they have a tighter turn radius. This lets you cut corners tighter than a bumper pull trailer and lets you maneuver the trailer in more narrow spaces. This tight turn radius can be a double-edged sword, though.  If you turn too sharp, you can damage the trailer’s fender, street signs, and other cars on the road; so be careful!

The biggest advantage of a gooseneck trailer over a bumper pull is its stability.  Since the tongue weight of the trailer is over the truck’s rear axle instead of at the back of the frame, the potential of the trailer to sway is minimized. This increased stability also means gooseneck trailers can accommodate more weight and be larger than a bumper pull trailer. Goosenecks have more room for any cargo you haul.

Conclusion

At Trailer Solutions, it's easy to find the option that's right for you.  So stop in and talk to our helpful staff, and let them find the solutions to your trailer needs.
